今日起動したときに

Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems.

と言うエラーが出ました。

ぐぐると

[ubuntu] [SOLVED] Ubuntu Server 8.10 on a Dell Poweredge 2600
が出てきました。

/boot/grub/menu.lst を編集するといいようです。

具体的にはカーネルでrootを読み込むための遅延を設定するようです。下に示しているようにrootdelay=90をカーネルの行に追加します。

title        Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-9-generic
root        (hd0,0)
kernel        /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-9-generic root=UUID=b620043a-1217-4a75-aeb7-fd846d747543 ro quiet splash rootdelay=90
initrd        /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-9-generic
quiet

と変更してみた。無事修復出来ました。

このエラーが出たときに一番最初にするべきこと

と表示された時に

exit

と入力してください。普通にデスクトップが起動します。

リンク先はDELLの場合と書いてありますが、どうも8.04から8.10にアップグレードした場合発生するようです。
